Adopt a penguin | Ping (Yellow-eyed penguin)

Yellow-eyed penguins live only in New Zealand, on the SE coast of the South Island and a few offshore islands. These amazing penguins, distinguished by the yellow band around their eyes, are the largest species outside of Antarctica. Preferring to nest amongst the thick vegetation adorning the rugged coastlines, they come ashore each night during the nesting and chick rearing season and walk and climb up to a kilometer inland to reach their nest sites. Adults are monogamous, and a pair will share the responsibility of raising their chicks.

Yellow-eyed penguins are threatened by loss of suitable breeding habitat, introduced predators that prey on both penguins and their eggs, disturbance by people on beaches and at nesting sites, and entanglement in fishing nets when they are at sea. In the late 1990's numbers had fallen so low that they became the subject of a Threatened Species Recovery Plan by the New Zealand government. Numbers have now recovered to an estimated 4,000 individuals, but they still need our help. Care for the Wild International is working with the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust to ensure that their recovery continues.

Help us to protect and enhance the yellow-eyed penguins' habitat, so that their future can be secured. By becoming a foster parent you are enabling us to continue improving the lives of yellow-eyed penguins and other displaced or injured animals, and to protect the habitats of their wild counterparts

Your adoption will help us to continue the work we are doing with the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust to make sure New Zealand's unique yellow-eyed penguins continue to recover.
