Located on the Isle of Skye, the International Otter Survival Fund stemmed from an Otter rehabilitation centre established in 1993. Now in it's tenth year IOSF continues the important work the charity was set up for, not only to conserve our own species of otter (the Eurasian Otter, Lutra Lutra) but all of the 13 species worldwide, all of which are under threat. As well as international project funding IOSF also cares for the otters at their sanctuary in Scotland as well as giving advice for orphaned otters in Poland, Portugal, Canada, Nigeria, Ireland and India. Being at the top of the food chain, the otter is very susceptible to pollution which becomes concentrated at higher levels. Otters are therefore important indicators of the status of the environment and can be used to encourage environmental conservation in general. |

MEET THE OTTERS
CHITRA
Chitra is a young, male, smooth-coated otter being cared for at the Wildlife Rescue Centre, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was born in captivity following the confiscation of his mother from poachers and will not be able to return to the wild. It is hoped that Chitra will become part of a breeding/educational programme, supported by IOSF, which aims to preserve future numbers of the smooth-coated otter

Tweed was found in the near to the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders and taken to an SSPCA wildlife unit near Edinburgh. Following intensive care he was later transferred to the IOSF centre on the Isle of Skye, where he will stay until old and strong enough to return to the wild.
LELLY
Lelly was found at about 3 months old in the Scottish Borders and taken to the South of Scotland Wildlife Hospital where she was cared for until was well enough to be transferred to the IOSF. Lelly has made a good start to her rehabilitation and is growing well.
ELIZA
Eliza is a young, female otter, rescued as she was clinging to the bank of a Cumbrian river.
