Adopt an Orangutan | Wenda

Forest clearance for logging, mining and palm plantations has led to a consistent decline in orangutan numbers over the last ten years. The species is now only found in relic populations on the South East Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The Sumatran orangutan is classified as critically endangered and the Borneo's as endangered. Logging and plantations are not only cutting into the orangutan's rainforest habitat, but also opening up previously inaccessibly areas to poachers. Forest invaders often shoot orangutan mothers and take their babies to be sold as pets.

Orphan orangutans lucky enough to be rescued and taken to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP)'s rescue centre in northern Sumatra receive the treatment, comfort and love they desperately need. They also gradually learn the essential survival skills that will enable them to return to the wild. Many orphans have been successfully rehabilitated and now live independently in safe reserves.

By becoming a foster parent you are enabling us to continue improving the lives of rescued orangutans like Wenda and other displaced or injured animals, and to protect the habitats of their wild counterparts

Orangutan Wenda

Adopt Wenda - Wenda was rescued in October 2009, when she was just one year old. She was found locked in a cage with another baby orangutan in a garage in someone's back yard. She was severely malnourished, had a distended "pot belly", dry skin and very sparse hair.

She was taken to a rescue centre run by the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP). Wenda is a Sumatran Orangutan, a species whose population is listed as critically endangered.

By adopting her you will help to provide her with the loving care she depends upon as she embarks on the slow journey back to the wild. Your adoption will also benefit the other orphans at the centre.
