Adopt an Elephant - Kamboyo
Kamboyo was born in July 2005 and was just 6 months old when rangers found him wandering aimlessly all alone.  Tragically he had lost his mother when his herd was driven from a human settlement.

Kamboyo was rescued and transferred to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant sanctuary where he received emergency veterinary care. Ailing frightened and desperate, Kamboyo was encouraged to feed by stable-mate Kora, giving his rescuers hope that he would pull through and eventually heal the physical and psychological scars left by his ordeal.

Kamboyo obviously enjoyed being with his own kind again at the orphanage and has settled in well thanks to the loving care he receives from his human surrogate mothers.  But he will need long-term support in order to return to the life he once knew.

Did you know? Elephant facts
Elephants are the world's largest land mammals. Their noses, gestation period (nearly two years), front teeth, and maybe even their memory, are the longest in the animal kingdom. They, along with their extinct relatives, have lived everywhere, except Australia and Antarctica, from sea level to heights of more than 3600m, in habitats ranging from deserts to rain forests. In fact, if it were not for humans, elephants would probably rate among the most successful species on Earth.

Orphan elephants

Once forming a series of populations almost continuous from Africa to China, they are now confined to just two main groups, African and Asian Elephants, which are separated by several thousand miles. Loss of habitat and the ivory trade are the two biggest factors in the decline in elephants. During the 1980's over half of Africa's elephants was killed and the elephant population was reduced by 600,000. Regarding habitat, the pattern is a familiar one as traditional elephant habitat is carved up for agricultural use and the elephants pushed into ever shrinking areas.
