The New European Distressed Donkey Initiative is established to offer care and safety to donkeys (and to a lesser degree Ponies) within Britain and Europe at risk from neglect, cruelty or maltreatment. We have a sanctuary near to Boulogne for donkeys from UK and Northern France, and another not far from Bordeaux for the donkeys from Southern France and Iberia. Our head office is in Cornwall (UK)

Once a donkey has been taken into our care, we continue to undertake the cost of care month after month, year after year. The bills increase, if anything, as the animals' requirements increase - for example, Bracken needed expensive painkillers nearly all of the time. On arrival she had to be carried from the lorry - her feet were so painful that she had been "walking" on her knees for months. We can only continue to help the donkeys if the funds are available to pay for the bills.

Adopting a donkey makes a perfect gift for young and old alike, and in doing so you are really helping to make a difference.
The Gift Pack
The Adoption Pack comes complete with a prettily wrapped donkey with a name tag which can be sent directly to the recipient, together with an adoption certificate and photo, and your chosen message on the gift tag. They will also receive a newsletter and a new photo in 6 months time.

Meet the donkeys.
Nick
- A big brown donkey who came to us with no tail & no name. Now he has a name, but still not much of a tail.

Valentina - Born on Valentiness Day 1996 to Alice. Very much a free spirit, and ignores all fences and rules!

Gilbert - "Bertie" to his friends. Very small & had a really bad time from some children where he was born, so is still quite nervous.

Utah - he was the most afraid when we found them and is still afraid of strangers

Dakota - is a dark grey male with stunning markings, rescued from an uncaring owner in northern France.

Tahoe - is a dark brown male and very friendly, in spite of what he was suffering when he was found

Sequoia - was rescued in the north of France in a very bad way, but lots better now, and happy with her lovely daughter Sierra

Sierra - the daughter of Sequoia, born in safety and very playful!

Damien - a leggy grey donkey from south west France.

Boysie - a super-tall donkey, rescued with his sister. Very sweet natured but a little knock-kneed!

Coquette - super tall, like her brother. Much more confident - just a pretty french lady.

Penny - an ex-Weston-Super-Mare beach donkey. Rather pushy, but with a nice nature and a very pale coat. Doesn't discipline her foal Laura as much as she might!

Bridie - needed 3 years of love and gentleness before she would allow anyone to approach her head - imagine how many beatings it took to create her fright.

Jimmy - he is a lightweight donkey, coloured all white. He is more nervous than most, and came from Blackpool.

Joey - a very handsome brown donkey with marvellous eye-makeup! He was a stallion when he came, and although now gelded, thinks he should still behave in the same way.

Laura - Penny's foal, born in 1994. Looked like an orangutan until recently, with a long orange coat! - this is now being replaced by an elegant grey one. She is very tall.

Jazzy - (full name Jasminius) was born when the Jasmine was in flower. Lightweight and very fast, he can be rather naughty, and sometimes has to be put in the goat paddock.

Bonjovi- a mule, a wonderful pink colour, and apparently very rare, he was rescued in 1992 in a very bad state. He is broken to harness and saddle, but doesn't work these days.

Radar - is a Dartmoor pony, taken from his mother whilst tiny to be sent to market. He is now very gentle with people - lots rougher with his pony chums.

Emily - has come into the sanctuary when the 2 ponies she lived with started to be unkind to her. She was very lonely as she had to choose between being in her stable alone, or in a field with unkind ponies.

Daisy - had a very poor time when she was born, and had to be hand fed. These days she is very sweet natured, and is the only donkey Jazzy doesn't try to boss around.

Ned - grey and spotted, very handsome and slim. He was found abandoned on a beach, fending for himself. Came to join us in 1995 and amiable to all.

Quattro - came in with Radar. He is a much shyer and easily frightened pony.

Butterworth - Born in May 1992 as a complete surprise to everyone, in a field of buttercups (hence the name). Very smart with 3 coloured patches, like his mother, Rosie.

Heather - She was about to be abandoned on the moor when we heard about her. She is very pretty with a long brown coat.
