The Bear. A cuddly exterior and shared human characteristics belie great power and strength, and so, people have felt both a warm kinship as well as fear from this great animal. The origins of Bears go back millions of years. Now six of the eight species of Bear are considered endangered. It is the familiar theme of habitat loss together with exploitation by mankind that we are faced with yet another animal species struggling against the odds for it's survival. Loss of habitat and fragmentation are the immediate threat today, the result of centuries of competition with human beings. Providing enough space to survive is the best way to preserve the Bear in the long term. Conservation areas can be considered a refuge from extinction, so long as the Bear populations within these areas remain high.
